One of the pioneers in modern radiol- ogy, Dr. Paulin was highly re- garded through- out the world for his work by both the radiol- ogy and cardiol- ogy communi- ties. At the time of his death, he was Professor Emeritus at Harvard Medical School and had been working regularly in the Department of Radiology at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, as he had for almost a half century. He led a full and active life until this death. Dr.

Paulin was born in Bad- Muenster am Stein, Germany, and immigrated to Sweden in 1953 where he met his wife, Birgit, a few years later. In 1970 he immigrated with his family to the United States and became an American Citizen in 1979. He loved the personal and academic freedom that the United States provided him and his family. Dr. Paulin was an avid sports enthusiast, dedicated chess player, vora- cious reader, and art and oys- ter lover.

In 1951, he graduated from the University of Mainz, Ger- many with a Doctor of Medi- cine degree. He then received the degree of Medical License from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden in 1958. This was followed some years later by the degree of Medicine Doctor (equivalent to a Ph.D.) from the University of Gothen- burg, Sweden. In 1965, Coro- nary Angiography was a new when Dr. Paulin, as a doc- toral candidate at the Univer- sity of Gothenburg, published his dissertation on the subject.

His doctoral thesis, Angiography A Technical, Anatomic and Clinical written 50 years ago, was rec- ognized as a landmark imme- diately after publication. Coro- nary angiography, the graphic demonstration of the coronary arteries in the living patient, is one of the most often practiced invasive diagnostic procedures today. His colleagues at Bos- Beth Is- rael Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) say that is in large part due to Dr. Paulin himself. Shortly after the publication of the thesis, Dr.

Paulin was in- vited to study at Stanford by Her- bert Abrams, M.D. In 1970, Dr. Paulin became Radiologist- in-Chief at Beth Israel Hospital and was awarded a full Profes- sorship in Radiology, at Har- vard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts. In 1974, he was further honored by being the recipient of an endowed chair in Radiology by the fam- ily of Miriam M. Stoneman and retired from this position in 1994.

He continued to work in the department until his re- tirement from medicine on his 87th birthday in 2013. Dr. Paulin is survived by his wife of 57 years, Birgit, and his four children Susanne of Raleigh, NC, Magnus of Cam- bridge, Ma, Helena and Viveca, of Los Angeles, CA. In addi- tion grandchildren, Eliza- beth of Los Angeles, CA Mi- chael of Raliegh, NC, Magnus, Mattias, Axel of Los Angeles, and his sister Tosca Roeren, of Bad Muenster Am Stein and several nieces and nephews in Sweden and Germany survive him. Funeral services will be pri- vate; a public memorial will be announced at a later date.

OCTOBER 18, 1926 JANUARY 10, 2014 RALEIGH Our beloved Robert passed away peacefully early on Friday, December 20, 2013. Robert grew up in Ra- leigh and spent many of his last years here painting beau- tiful pictures, playing music and working on his farm that he dearly loved.

His sense of humor and lack of pretense constantly put people around him at ease. Always there for me, Robert was a wonderful brother, my best friend and more precious to me than words can express and he will forever live in my heart.

He kept me grounded in reality but with a gentle love. We spent many hours together talking, listen- ing to his music and discuss- ing art and his paintings. Each and every day when I leave work Robert, I will miss call- ing you and also will miss those long chats in the late hours of the evening that we shared. Known as Uncle to my kids who adored him, he lit up the entire house with fun and laughter when he came over. He demonstrated to them the essence of peace, serenity and joy.
