The North Star Newsletter (2024)

Apex Friendship Elementary School

June 7, 2024

To the AFES Community from Dr. Gamble -

It’s been an amazing Year 2 for the Stars! Thank you for all the ways you have supported students and staff this school year.

Let’s have a wonderful 3 days next week and continue to celebrate our success! Best wishes to our 5th grade students! You will always be a STAR!

We wish you a wonderful summer! The AFES Stars will be ready to SHINE again in August!

Important Information:

Please wear your AFES Spirit Wear next week as much as you want. We love SHINING bright!

All library books are due! Please return library books to the media center next week.

If you are leaving AFES and would like to donate your carpool tag for reuse, please turn it into the main office after school ends.

The North Star will pause after this week, but we will be sending out messages throughout the summer. A weekly message will resume beginning in early August. If you are changing schools or have a middle school student, the system will roll over on July 1 and you will start receiving the new messages.

Summer Learning Opportunities

The county has created this Summer Learning Document for families to engage in continuous learning during the summer vacation. Please take a minute to look over this document and take advantage of some of the educational programs your child can do over break.

End of Year Events

As you come into school for end of year events, please remember that you should only be in your child’s classroom or learning commons. For safety reasons, no one should be in other areas of the building. You may only sign out your child from your child’s classroom if sign out sheets are available or from the main office. You should never report to your child’s classroom and ask for your child without signing them out first.

Full details about visitors can be found on page 11 of our school handbook:

Buy a Yearbook

Celebrate our Second Year by purchasing a Yearbook for your family!

https://www.treering.com/purchase?PassCode=1016681005914421

New yearbook purchases will be shipped directly to parent homes. Any questions about yearbooks should be directed to TreeRing Customer Service using their website.

Did you know that the Yearbook has been produced by a team of AFES staff and administration and with the support of all staff submitting classroom pictures? The yearbook is not a fundraiser so that costs are kept low. Any additional yearbooks purchased can be given to the main office for counselors to distribute to students who may not have one. Thank you!

PBIS Celebration

AFES will be celebrating meeting end of the year SHINE benchmarks with a PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Support) Glow Party during Specials on Monday, June 10.

Students are encouraged to wear neon or white shirts so they will SHINE and GLOW at the dance celebration. The event is for students only.

Special thanks to the PTA for their support! We are excited to celebrate our shining STARS and all their hard work this year!

* Please direct all questions about enrollment and paperwork to Mrs. Middleton.

* Have you enrolled in AFES, but your plans have changed? If you are not coming to AFES for the 2024-2025 school year, please contact Mrs. Middleton at

amiddleton@wcpss.net or call 919-694-8454 and ask to speak with Mrs. Middleton. We need you to fill out withdrawal forms. Thank you!

Student Attendance and Enrollment for 24-25

Students who do not attend school in the first 20 days will be withdrawn per state policy on Day 21. This could have significant consequences. If you are traveling and not planning to be present on the first day of school, your child must attend school by the 20th day on September 25, 2024. Students who are withdrawn must be re-enrolled upon your return to school. Please note that schools are funded based on student enrollment on Day 20, so every single student counts! If 30 students didn’t show up, we could lose teaching positions!

Bus Transportation

Transportation Request Deadlines

If you are not currently registered for transportation but would like service next school year, you must request transportation by the deadline listed below for your student's school calendar to ensure service on the first day. Please only request service if you plan for your student to be a regular rider. Students who don’t ride consistently will be removed from bus rosters. To register, go to www.wcpss.net/busrider.

Deadline: Traditional calendar schools: July 15
